If you own or drive a vehicle in Canada, you must be insured. Different provinces and territories have different requirements, but the three mandatory elements of auto insurance are: |
- Liability - if you cause an accident and someone sues you
- Accident benefits - if you or someone in your vehicle is hurt in an accident
- Uninsured Motorist - if you’re in an accident with an uninsured or hit-and-run driver
In addition, depending on the age of your car and your personal preferences you can choose to protect yourself further by adding optional loss or damage coverage’s that would protect you when you’re not covered by direct compensation property damage:
- Specified perils - Covers the cost to repair or replace your vehicle if it’s damaged by specific things like fire, theft and lighting.
- Comprehensive - Covers the same as specified perils plus vandalism, falling or flying objects and other things.
- Collision - Covers the cost to repair or replace your vehicle if it’s involved in a crash (with a car or other object) ir it tips over.
- All Perils - Combines collision, comprehensive and more. This is the broadest optional loss or damage coverage you can get through us.
You can also add additional coverage’s known as 'endorsements' onto your policy. Typically, if you carry full coverage on your vehicle companies will offer some of these endorsements in a bundle. Typically, these bundles will include the following:
- S.E.F. 20 - Loss of Use endorsement
This endorsement pays for the rental of an automobile or the use of taxicabs and public means of transportation as a result of the loss of use of the automobile provided for in the policy.
- S.E.F.27 - Legal Liability for Damage to Non-Owned Automobiles
The purpose of this endorsement is to cover the Insured’s legal liability for loss of or damage to a non-owned vehicle arising from collision and/or comprehensive or specified perils. The insured must specify the types of vehicle that may be in his custody and indicate the required limit per occurrence. (Limits apply)
- S.E.F. NO. 37 - Limitation to Automobile Sound & Electronic Communication Equipment Endorsement
This endorsement is used to limit loss of or damage to sound and electronic communication equipment caused by theft or attempted theft up to $1500.00
- S.E.F. NO. 43R & 43L - LIMITED WAIVER OF DEPRECIATION
This endorsement waives depreciation on repair or replacement for loss from an insured peril for the first 30 months that a new car is put in service. - The Insured must be the original owner of the vehicle. - Limits the insurer’s liability to the actual purchase price of the automobile and its equipment of the manufactures suggested List Price New at the original date of purchase, whichever is the lesser amount. The vehicle must be insured for full physical damage under section C
Some other endorsements that companies may offer for a fee or free of charge (if a driver qualifies) include:
* Accident Waiver Endorsement
This endorsement protects an insured’s driving record after they have had their first At Fault Loss.
* Minor Conviction Rating Waiver Endorsement
This endorsement protects an insured’s clean driving record as a result of 1 minor moving traffic violation as shown on the drivers abstract within the 3 years before the effective date of renewal.
* Insured must meet certain underwriting criteria to qualify for this endorsement
